Located in the Kadavu Islands, south of Fiji’s mainland, Kokomo Private Island is an island paradise unlike any other, a sanctuary for multigenerational families and an enticing retreat for couples. A venture straight from the hearts of the Walker family, Kokomo was founded with a deep commitment to preservation of the island’s pristine environment, and its guest programs and activities reflect this passion.
At the heart of the island’s sustainable commitment is a belief that guests should be able to engage in the island’s conservation and leave the island with a deepened appreciation of its precious environment. Guests can take part in a range of unforgettable marine activities – from diving and snorkelling to Manta Identification and Coral Restoration - that provide fascinating insights into the surrounding ocean environment and the chance to contribute to its protection.
Kokomo Private Island has introduced an exciting new activity, ‘A Day in the Life of a Marine Biologist’, which offers both beginner and advanced levels, taking guests on a journey of discovery into the island’s extraordinary marine environment, led by Kokomo’s passionate team of resident marine biologists under Senior Marine Biologist Viviana Taubera.
Beginner Level Marine Biologist Course
Designed for under-12s and beginners, this is a two-hour marine biology experience with an exclusive orientation led by Kokomo’s Marine Biology Team. Guests dive into the world beneath the surface, refining their skills in identifying fish and coral through captivating GoPro images and personalised slates during a supervised snorkelling expedition. The session concludes with a private tour of Kokomo’s incredible Coral Gardens, a memory to last a lifetime. At the conclusion of the course, participants receive a certificate of completion and a video capturing the highlights of their extraordinary snorkelling adventure.
Advanced Level Marine Biologist Course
The Advanced Level Marine Biologist Course is a four-hour experience for over-12s and those who are comfortable in open water. The journey commences with an intimate orientation and presentation in Kokomo’s marine centre led by the island’s distinguished marine biologists Viviana Taubera and Lily Taoi. Guests then travel by boat to Kokomo’s majestic outer reef, where they will have the chance to assist the Kokomo team in their pioneering work. Their unforgettable day will include an exhilarating drone check and the chance to snorkel alongside the marine biologists as they conduct their vital work on individualised Manta identifications. At the conclusion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of course completion and an exclusive Kokomo Marine Biologist t-shirt as a special memento of their exceptional journey.
Set within a 140-acre private island, surrounded by Fiji’s glistening waters and the Great Astrolabe Reef, Kokomo Private Island is a pristine, sustainable haven. The resort was built and is operated with a guiding vision of giving back more than is taken; from the repurposed local cinnamon wood used in construction of its luxurious villas to the two hectares of edible garden providing produce to the restaurants. Initiatives such as coral restoration, manta ray tagging, mangrove reforestation and Dock to Dish (a sustainable community-based fishing program) empower the Kokomo team to preserve important elements of the native culture, whilst furthering the commitment to an environmentally and culturally sustainable future.
